Meet Ciarra Rouwhorst

Calligrapher | Illustrator | Designer | Owner | Really Nice Person

Hey, it's so nice to meet you! My name is Ciarra Rouwhorst. I am the Calligrapher, Illustrator, and Designer behind Silver Fox Calligraphy & Design. When you submit an inquiry, or leave a comment on Instagram, it's me that you are talking to! 

I work out of my home studio in Petoskey, Michigan. I live on a hill overlooking the Little Traverse Bay with my super supportive husband Mark, and our fur baby Atlas. I feel super grateful to live in what I think is the cutest town in Northern Michigan. I know they are all adorable, and I can admit that I'm a bit partial. I also enjoy working with many couples who choose Northern Michigan as the destination for one of the most important and beautiful days of their lives.

I take my work very seriously. But I don't take myself seriously. I really love helping people. So whether you need one of a kind wedding invitations that your guests will LOVE, or you need a logo that reflects the direction you want to take your business, or you just need someone to bounce ideas off of, I am so there. I believe in authenticity and tangible details. I collect antique volumes of classic literature, which started with books from my great grandfather. These books helped me to appreciate the incalculable value of  heirlooms and keepsakes from a very young age. I like working by myself while listening to nerdy podcasts and writing with vintage calligraphy nibs. 

I value the traditional and historical calligraphy practices, and am currently a member of IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penman, Egrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting). However, I blend traditional techniques and tools with contemporary fine art aesthetics. My hand lettering is not perfect Copperplate, and it is not cutesy modern calligraphy either. I strive to portray refined femininity, and elevated design while embracing the natural imperfections of pen and ink.

I am a self-taught artist and designer. I also thrive in empowering others. I believe that voracious learning, and immortal curiosity can shape us. I, therefore, am happy to share what I have learned through online classes, and in person workshops.

And this is me, for real. Big thanks to Oden and Janelle for helping me be my awkward self. I completely realize this may not be the most professional picture to use on my website. But in complete honesty, I don't only want to make a good impression. I want to make an accurate impression. When you hire Silver Fox Calligraphy, you are working with me. I am friendly and kind. I will bend over backwards to make you happy. My design work, clients, and business relationships are very important to me. But I am also not afraid to say sorry, and will be the first one to make fun of myself.
